The Importance of Fiber in Your Diet

Many of us do not have enough fiber in our daily diets. Fiber used to be something that was avoided because it felt hard to eat and usually didn’t taste very good. These days however, there is no excuse for not eating enough fiber, as there are a number of products available to make the consumption of high fiber foods a lot easier. We all know that it is important to keep a healthy, balanced diet, however, sometimes fiber just slips to the wayside when we are trying to remember all of the other nutritious foods our body needs. To ensure that you are eating enough fiber foods on a regular basis, it is important to understand why fiber is so important to your diet.

Keep a Healthy Digestive System

Fiber assists your body in processing food through your digestive system. During the digestion process, fiber also helps your body to absorb much needed, valuable nutrients that would otherwise go to waste. Insoluble fiber helps the bowel to pass food more easily, assisting the body in maintaining regular bowel movements and avoiding constipation. Foods which contain insoluble fiber include: wholemeal foods, brown rice, lentils and beans. Having a healthy bowel allows the rest of your digestive system to be healthy too. Without a healthy digestive system you often experience constipation, stomach complications and other health problems such as acid reflux and heart burn. Consuming foods which are high in insoluble fiber will help you to maintain a healthy digestive system.

Maintain a Healthy Weight

We all know that maintaining a healthy weight is one of the vital areas to maintaining a healthy body. People who are overweight suffer from the increased risk of diabetes, heart problems, high cholesterol and respiratory complications. A high fiber diet can help to lower your weight and reduce the risk of many life threatening health issues. Fiber contains no calories and assists your digestive system in better processing foods so that they can more quickly leave your body before turning into fats in the body. In addition to the internal benefits of weight loss, fiber also provides the sensation of feeling fuller for longer, helping you to suppress your appetite. Maintaining a healthy weight is necessary for having a healthy lifestyle and a diet high in fiber can greatly assist you with this.

Fiber Can Lower Your Cholesterol

Ensuring that you consume a sufficient amount of soluble fiber can help your body in lowering cholesterol levels and controlling your blood sugar. Soluble fiber can be found in all fruits and vegetables; however, levels are especially high in apples, pears, strawberries and citrus fruits. High cholesterol can lead to life threatening health problems such as a major increase in the risk of heart disease. Ingesting a satisfactory amount of fiber every day is important to maintaining a balanced diet and lowering your cholesterol, helping to decrease the risk of heart disease and other serious health problems.

Before I knew what fiber was, my mom was also mentioning it. She would say, “get your fiber in so you can help your inside out” Sounds a little funny but we would all make sure we eat all our meal.

What I like about fiber is that you can get it from many different foods, so it is possible that everyone can find a fiber rich food they will enjoy.

Brown rice is very rich in fiber and I enjoy eating those citrus fruits too. When I was younger I was extremely picky, like a lot of kids are, but as I get older I realize and started eating foods that I know are good for me – whether I like them or not.

Seems like I got wiser :)

Our digestive system plays such an important role in our health, it is absolutely essential for us to pay special attention to it. If fiber can help our digestive system, help us maintain a healthy weight, and help keep our cholesterol level in check, then nothing should keep us from including fiber in our diets.

Thank you for this useful post.
