Skin Types: How to Determine and Care for Yours

In order to properly care for your skin, you should first determine what your skin type is. Proactiv Solution is the only skin care regimen on the market that is suitable for any skin type. Experts have described 6 classifications of facial skin, let’s take a look:

1. Normal or Balanced skin is characterized by a smooth, clear complexion, with few lines or blemishes. This type of skin has no oily shine or enlarged pores, and no dry, flaky areas.

2. Oily Skin is often shiny and sallow in tone. The shine is caused by the accumulation of oil, both in the morning after a night’s sleep and in mid-afternoon. Oily skin has large pores and a tendency to develop blackheads and whiteheads. Its texture has a heavy appearance, and dead skin tends to flake off around the nose area. Excessive oil is usually associated with youthful skin, and often becomes less oily with age. Two advantages of oily skin are that it tans readily and does not age as quickly.

3. Dry Skin is typically of fair-skinned people. Finely textured, with tiny pores, dry skin is characterized by noticeable facial lines and excessive flaking of dead cells. Dry skin shows signs of aging more readily than others skin types, chaps easily in wind or cold, and does not hold makeup well. One advantage of dry skin is that it is less prone to blemishes than oily skin.

4. Sensitive Skin is usually also very dry. People with sensitive skin commonly have allergic skin reactions, such as rashes, blotches, and swelling. They sunburn easily and show bruises frequently. Sensitive skin is irritated by dirt and pollution, and reacts quickly to extremes of temperature.

5. Combination Skin is usually dry at the sides of the face, and oily toward the center. Each area requires customized care, and the eyes and neck areas generally need extra moisture.

6. Blemished or Problem skin is associated with blackheads, whiteheads, and clogged oil glands which cause skin eruptions, such as acne. It is often caused by improper diet, poor cleansing, or hormonal changes.

How to test your skin:

Carefully cleanse your face, and pat dry with a clean towel.

Two or three hours later, take several sheets of facial tissue; rub one piece of tissue across your forehead. If it is stained, you have oily skin on your forehead. if it is clean but slightly damp, you have normal skin on your forehead. If it is clean and dry, you have dry skin on your forehead.

Repeat the tissue test on your chin, nose, and cheeks. if all these areas stain the tissue, you have oily skin. If the tissue is clean but damp, your skin is normal. If dry and clean, you have dry skin. If some areas are dry and others oily, you have combination skin.If you have numerous blemishes, you probably have problem skin requiring special care. If your skin shows allergic reactions and a quick response to changes in temperature, you probably have sensitive skin.

This test should help you identify your skin type. Each type of skin has a different set of special needs, and your basic skin-care routine should be modified to satisfy those needs. All skin types benefit greatly from proper diet, plenty of rest, and exercise.

How to care for Normal Skin:

Every morning – Apply cleansing cream or cleansing cream and soap and water twice. Rinse thoroughly in cool water, and apply a moisturizer for three or four minutes. You can now apply foundation and makeup, if desired.

Noon – It is always best to apply completely fresh makeup, but you may not be able to do so during your lunch hour. In this case you can try to retouch your morning makeup, being careful not to add too much.

Every night – Repeat your morning routine, but add a skin toning lotion – on a moistened cotton pad, for deep cleansing. Use a night cream for moisturizing. Your face need to breathe, so no makeup. Yes, I do know people who wear makeup to bed. This is probably the reason they have to constantly rely on makeup all the time because they have destroyed there skin. It could always be rejuvenated, but it will take some time, patience and absolutely no makeup at nights for full recovery. Weekly – Give yourself a facial mask.

Always work to keep your skin in good condition and protect it as much as possible from aging. Use makeup sparingly, and avoid oily lubricants.

How to Care for Oily Skin:

Every morning – Cleanse your face twice thoroughly with a deep-pore cleanser – made for oily skin, and or a mild castile soap. Rinse with cool water and pat dry. Lightly Apply a non-oily liquid foundation, and powder.

Noon – Completely cleanse your face again, using cleansing pads – if you find them more convenient than washing. Reapply a non-oily moisturizer, foundation, and light powder.

Every night – Repeat your morning cleansing routine, twice if needed, and rinse with cool water. Use a skin-toning lotion on a dry cotton pad, and a light, non-oily moisturizer, especially around the eyes.

Twice per week – Give yourself a facial mask. On alternate days, use your cleansing grains gently. If your skin is very oily you may use the cleansing grains daily.

Diet and Exercise – Keep your diet low in fats and sweets, and high in lean meat, green vegetables, and fresh fruits. A few minutes of sun each day helps to curb excessive oil production and prevent blemishes, but do not overdo it. Plenty of exercise will help you to maintain healthy skin.

Proper cleansing is particularly important for you in order to prevent blemishes. Use skin-care products made especially for oily skin, and cleanse your face three or more times daily, if necessary, to control oily residue.

How to Care for Dry Skin:

Every morning – Cleanse twice with a deep-pore cleanser. Soap is not recommended for dry skin because of its drying qualities. Apply a skin-toning lotion with a moistened cotton pad to remove all traces of cleansing cream. Next, apply a moisturizer and allow it to set for three or four minutes before applying a creamy makeup. Always wear a thin layer of moisturizer whenever you are home.

Every night – Repeat your morning cleansing routine, twice if needed, and rinse with cool water. Use a skin-toning lotion on a dry cotton pad. Apply an enriched night cream and leave a thin coat of cream on overnight.

Once per week – Give yourself a facial mask.

Diet and Exercise – Poor diet and lack of exercise will contribute to your dry skin, so eat healthy meals and exercise regularly.

Dry skin needs extra protection and lubrication. avoid excessive exposure to the sun, wind, or overheated rooms – your skin will wrinkle quickly if exposed. Always protect your complexion with moisturizers; never apply makeup without first using a moisturizer.

How to Care for Combination Skin:

Every morning – Cleanse your face twice with cleansing cream and/or soap. Rinse with cool water or a skin-toning lotion. Apply a light coat of moisturizer on the dry areas of your face before applying makeup.

Noon – Carefully blot the oily areas of your face with a tissue as often as needed. Be careful not to rub your face; just pat gently. Dust with alight coat of powder.

Every night – Repeat your morning cleansing, twice if necessary. Apply a skin-toning lotion with a dry cotton pad to oily areas, and apply a moisturizer to dry areas.

Once per week – Give yourself a facial mask.

You will have to care for each area of your face according to its type of skin. Change your skin-care routine accordingly if your skin changes with the seasons or with a change of environment.

How to Care for Blemished or Problem Skin:

Follow the skin-care routine described above for your particular skin type, and consult a dermatologist if these measures do not correct your problem. Some problem may take a while to respond to proper care.

Acne – The most common skin disorder of teenagers and young adults, is due to excessive oils. A careful diet and skin care for oily skin should help considerably. Fortunately, most cases of acne disappear by the time a person reaches the twenties. Again, Proactiv Solution

Blemishes – Other types of blemishes require medical attention. If you have an unusually large mole on your face, it is wise to consult a physician – especially if there is a change in its size and color. If a mole becomes infected, see your doctor.

Freckles – These brownish-yellow spots on the skin are hereditary. Freckles may make you self conscious of your looks, so if you are concerned about freckles, here are a few tips to help control or get them to match your overall complexion.

Shade your freckles from the sun. Sunshine seems to make them more noticeable and prevalent.

Use a foundation or concealer to cover your freckles whenever possible.

You can lighten freckles by applying a bleaching cream or lemon juice to the freckled areas. Apply the lemon juice to each freckle with a Qtip, and leave on for 30 minutes. Rinse off and apply a light coat of moisturizer to your skin.

The first component of a skin-care program is sound nutrition. Healthy eating habits are essential to your overall appearance and well-being. Good nutrition is also important for a glowing complexion. Your skin needs protein to replace old cells. Protein-rich foods, such as meat and dairy products, should be consumed every day. Vitamin A is needed for sparkling eyes and healthy skin. It is found mainly in green and yellow leafy vegetables and milk. Eat more salads and less or no candy bars.

Some foods harm your skin. Liquor and coffee can cause flushing, which may result in permanently red complexion over a period of time. Drinking liquor in moderation, and low-caffeine coffee will help you avoid flushing.

Oily foods, such as potato chips, candy, fried foods, and butter contribute to oily skin. Avoid these, especially if your skin is naturally oily. Chocolate has its benefits, but it is considered to be responsible for blemishes, and foods with a high iodine content – shellfish and iodized salt, can cause skin problems for some individuals.

Water is excellent for all skin types. Drink several glasses of water everyday if you would like your skin to glow with health.

Again, regardless of the skin type you are, it is important to eat healthy meals, exercise regularly, and get enough sleep.

    Thanks for this info. I am way past my twenties and still having trouble with acne. I guess my busy stressful lifestyle probably has something to do with it, but I hate them so much I am willing to do just about anything to get rid of them. I am taking your word for it. I am getting this product now! Good riddance acne!

      Hi Sandy, acne can be very annoying to deal with, and yes stress can really provoke a breakout. Proactiv solution is not a “if it work”, it absolutely works on every skin type.

    The top 3 most important factors are diet, exercise and enough sleep. The sleep thing is mostly ignored. It tends to give our skin the substantial rest it needs as it gradually rejuvenates itself on getting enough energy to be used for the next morning. If a person is so bushed up, then the skin tends to get so affected that it secretes oil in excess which may lead to irritation and skin problems.
