How To Banish Bad Breath

Bad breathe or halitosis is one of the most disturbing elements one could ever encounter.  It makes my curly hair straight and my straight hair curly – literally.  Seriously though, bad breathe is a real issue!  What makes it even worse is the fact that it cannot be detected by its carrier.  Sounds absurd, but since our oral cavity is connected to our nose by an opening in the back of our mouth, our noses tend to filter out and ignore interior odors that would help us to determine the quality of our own breath.  This means that we have to rely on someone – hopefully close to us, to let us know how our breath is doing.  It also means that we will have to do everything in our power to ensure our breath is not a knockout.

Years ago I had a boyfriend who was really dear to me.  He had everything going for him as far as an ‘ideal partner’ goes.  He was loyal, thoughtful, caring, faithful, kind, attentive, conscientious, and the list goes on and on.  There was just one problem – a huge one – his breath.  His halitosis was so bad, he would win first prize in a competition with crocs and alligators.

I tried everything to work with him to get rid of his bad breath.  He started going to the dentist once per month; brushing his teeth, tongue, and roof of mouth three times per day; flossing his teeth every night just before going to bed; using a variety of mouthwash; and adjusting his diet to eliminate odor causing foods and to include more fruits and water.  He even did a comprehensive medical check in order to determine if his problem was medical related.  In short, nothing was able to rid him of his halitosis and I had to find a way to help his breath before it was time to get intimate, so I started my own experiment and finally a solution that works!

This solution includes iodized salt, baking soda, and warm water.  Here is what you do: use one part salt and one part baking soda to four parts warm water to swish and gargle for at least one minute every morning and evening.  You can add 1 teaspoon of salt and 1 teaspoon of baking soda to four teaspoons of warm water in a cup and mix until dissolved.  (Avoid swallowing as you do not need excessive amount of salt entering your system.)  Then at nights, after flossing, use baking soda instead of toothpaste to brush your teeth, tongue, and roof of mouth – thoroughly. And finally, rinse with a clinically oxygenating oral mouthwash such as Dr. Katz’s TheraBreath Oral Rinse.

Believe me, in addition to brushing, flossing, eating healthy, and seeing your dentist at least every six months, this solution works like a dream come true.  Unlike mouthwash, that takes care of your bad breath for under an hour, the combination I have mentioned will take care of your bad breathe for an entire day. Using any of these methods single-handedly will not get rid of the problem or help you stay clear of it, but combining them and implementing them – everyday will ensure you a halitosis free mouth.

Simple home remedies are sometimes our best defense.  Most of us, at any given time will have iodized salt and baking soda in our cabinets.  Knowing what to do with them, however, will determine how well we benefit from them.  Breath fresheners, mints, and sugarless gums will only mask the problem temporarily.  This solution in combination with good oral hygiene will get to the source and eliminate it.

    I do hope my friends with this huge issue are reading this. I would share it with them but I do not know how to anonymously do it.

    Never heard of this combination, sounds like it will work though.

    Hi Sandy, it is such a sad thing when a person has a problem like bad breath and is not aware of it. The only anonymous way I can think of getting this to them is by printing and mailing it to them with no returning address.

    Also, if you are not sure how they will react if you tell them, or just don’t want to be the bearer of bad news, you can send them a lovely little package each with oral care stuff such as: toothpaste, toothbrush, tongue scraper, floss, baking soda, packet of salt, and a little note saying something like, “now your breath can stop being a knock-out.”

    Just trying to help, and I think they will get the message.

    I commend you greatly for being so honest and supportive of your boyfriend. Believe me ,it’s one of the best gifts for someone with chronic BB . Folks never want to say anything . Thinking they are saving the persons feelings or something dumb like that. Be Honest.

    If you give someone a ‘gift’ for bb ,tell them its for bb. Please be discrete, but please be honest .

    Take them aside and say ” Your breath stinks.”

      Thank you Deebo. Honesty is indeed the best policy, and telling someone close to us they have bad breath should not be that hard, but sometimes it is difficult to break the news.

      I would not want anyone close to me to suffer the embarrassment of someone blurting it out to them possibly in a public area, so I would take them aside and let them know. The best thing to do is to research solution, so you can offer it to them after telling them the bad news.

    Andrew you are comical “breath is kicking” very funny :)

    With the exception of being able to afford the dentist, it is quite possible to keep our breath fresh. As I mention quite often in my posts, there are at times basic things in our kitchen cupboards that can do many things to improve our lives. Salt, baking soda, and warm water are some of them; they can actually improve the health and quality of our mouths – but only in combination with regular dental check-ups, brushing, flossing etc.

    Using salt, baking soda, and warm water alone will not get anyone fresh breath! These are merely helpers!

    Marie I find it interesting that you have Dr. Katz bad breath products below your post for sale, but does not mention it once in your post.

    Maybe you do not know much about his products, but I have to tell you that they work very well at targeting the source of bad breath and stopping it in its track. They are natural, and alcohol free, which is the basis on which Dr. Katz’s products are made. Why did you not mention it in your post? Frankly, you should have done a post on it, add those links, then you could watch your sales improve! Just saying…

    Anyway, any post on helping bad breath is a good one, if those bad breath people would only try the methods offered.

      Hi Marilyn, I have actually used his products and I do love his toothpaste, and mouthwash. I find that they are very gentle on my teeth and gum because they do not contain alcohol. Even though some of them are labeled bad breath, I did not realize they were so good at getting rid of bad breath. So hearing from you makes a difference. Thanks for your info :) We learn from each other everyday, and I welcome new knowledge.

      I should definitely do some research on them, in terms of their effects on bad breath, and then follow up with a post.

    Hi,

    Gastroesophageal reflux disease, tonsil stones, sinusitis, respiratory infections, chronic pharyngitis and nasal obstruction etc … may also cause bad breath, so these dental diseases should be emphasized on many blog about halitosis. If regular brushing, flossing, and dental visits cannot keep your breath fresh, you should see a medical doctor as something as mentioned above could be medically wrong.

    Great write-up, I enjoyed reading through How To Banish Bad Breath. I do now have a problem that you might be able to help me with. I have problems with acne and I also have really sensitive skin and I am extremely vulnerable to the sun, so my skin is often drying out. What can you advise to help?

    I find that bad breath is not as common as it used to be, which is a great thing! I have had quite a few run ins with bad breath in my earlier years, but thank goodness, I have not lately. I like to use baking soda in addition to toothpaste, I think it makes my smile brighter too. Great article!

    Really, it matters to keep on top of oral hygiene not only to prevent offending others in social circles but especially for overall health. Those combinations will definitely keep the mouth healthy and odor free, unless there is an underlying medical condition causing the stench.
